Can you work a 38-hour week and be successful?
In the global business environment, there are demands to be on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In many cases, it can feel like you’re giving away your life to work. So how can an ambitious executive, manager or professional juggle work and family life and get to the top?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics found that 5 million of Australia’s 7.7 million full-time workers put in more than 40 hours per week. “Of them, 1.4 million put in more than 50 hours per week... [and] around 270,000 put in more than 70 hours per week.” So can you work 38 hours per week and be successful?
Forbes asked 50 billionaires how many hours a week they worked and found over half the respondents clocked up 60 hours a week or more. This figure may seem a little disheartening however almost 30% said they work close to the recommended full-time work load of 38 hours, 10% said they only work 20 hours, while 2% only work a mere 4 hours a week.
Creating a Work/Life Balance
While around 40% of the Forbes respondents have been successful at creating a work/life balance, we know in the everyday workplace that time is being wasted on the little things. As such, perhaps you can rise to the top on a 38 hour working week if you use your time well?
Here at Phocas, we did some research on time spent per week on non-productive activities, such as looking for the right data and then reworking it. Our findings are as follows:
- 47% of employees waste 1-2 hours per week on finding and reworking data
- 32% of employees waste 2-4 hours per week
- an incredible 14% of employees waste 5-10 hours waiting for, looking for, or reworking data.
So how can Phocas help put me on the right track to achieving a 38-hour work week?

For many businesses using an Oracle NetSuite ERP, financial and operational reporting often starts at a high level - total revenue, cost of goods sold (COGS) and operating expenses. But relying solely on this aggregated view is like trying to drive with a foggy windscreen. Every day, the business world creates more than 495.89 million terabytes of data. While the volume of data is impressive – and growing – collecting big data for data sakes is really not that useful. Most of the types of data we generate today is unstructured, which means it comes in different formats, sizes, and even shapes. This means you need to order it so you can manage and analyze the data which is often difficult for companies. However, getting this work right means you'll have actionable data.
